From 1 July 2026: Higher ART (Administrative Review Tribunal) fees to have a visa decision reviewed

From 1 July 2026, the application fee to have certain decisions reviewed at the Administrative Review Tribunal (ART) — the independent review body that replaced the former AAT — has increased for migration decisions. According to the ART website (updated 22 June 2026):

  • Migration decision review: $3,727. A 50% reduction may be available on financial hardship grounds.
  • Protection decision review: $2,293. This fee is generally payable only if the application is not successful.

The new fees apply to any application fee paid on or after 1 July 2026 — even if your review application was lodged before that date. ART fees are indexed annually to the Consumer Price Index (CPI).

What this means for you. If a visa (yours or a family member’s) has been refused or cancelled, you may have a right to ask the ART to review that decision within a strict time limit. Because the fee is now higher, the cost of pursuing a review has gone up, so preparing your case carefully and meeting deadlines matters more than ever.

A few things to keep in mind:

  • Time limits to apply for review are strict and vary depending on the type of decision. Missing a deadline can mean losing the right to review.
  • Not every decision can be reviewed at the ART. Your decision record should explain your review rights.
  • Every case is different; outcomes depend on your individual circumstances and the law in force.
